As the wise Meatloaf once said, “Two out of three ain’t bad.” My collaboration with 2C Creative, “Are We Alone? Week” for Science Channel won two PromaxBDA awards Thursday night. It earned a SILVER for art direction and a BRONZE for copywriting. All tolled, my friends at 2C earned seven PromaxBDA awards, including a couple GOLD. I’m very honored to be able to collaborate with such talented creatives! (Pictured below, left to right are: Jim McNulty, Chris Sloan, Ben Frank, Brian Eloe, Luis Martinez and Marni Wagner. Science Channel also won GOLD for their amazing brand spot from last year (which unfortunately I did not get to work on!), and my friend and client Matt Laster (pictured, right) got to receive his award on stage.
I still need to comb through the Awards book to see what the total haul was among my clients and friends throughout the industry, but congratulations to everyone who took home some hardware last night!
The conference itself was great, although as usual I didn’t get to nearly as many sessions as I would have liked. I did have the opportunity to see and hear from some rather famous folks like Kevin Smith, Denis Leary and Katie Couric.
But aside from the celebrity sightings, the most important part of the conference was making some great new connections with some of the most talented creatives in the industry. I always find it amazing just how interconnected we all are, and how many of the same people will all know across the country. Even if it doesn’t result in new projects right away, just having the opportunity to talk with so many accomplished and creative people was well worth the price of admission.
True to my declaration prior to Promax, I did not once break out my iPad or laptop to share work. Sure, I did my elevator pitch, but the best conversations were the ones where we just got to hang out and either catch up or get to know each other. It was nice to find kindred spirits who also believe it’s important to connect with the kind of people you really want to work with!
All-in-all, it was a great week of networking, learning and watching some of the best creative of the past year. Now it’s time to get to work on next year’s amazing creative!
